Buy Original Art Online Safely — A Complete Guide

How to buy art online without getting scammed, overpaying, or receiving something that isn't what was advertised.

The online art market is worth billions — and growing fast. But where there's money, there are scammers. The good news: buying art online is perfectly safe if you know what to look for. This guide will help you buy with confidence.

Before You Buy: Research the Seller

  • Check the website: Look for a registered business name and address. We're operated by Open Empower BV, registered in the Netherlands (KvK: 94970963). Legitimate galleries are transparent about who they are.
  • Read artist bios: Real galleries invest in detailed artist pages with biography, exhibition history, and technique descriptions. Vague or missing artist information is a red flag.
  • Look for reviews: Google the gallery name + "review." Check social media for customer posts and engagement.
  • Verify contact information: Email them a question. A real gallery responds promptly and knowledgeably. No response = walk away.

Payment Safety

How you pay matters more than almost anything else:

  • ✅ Credit card via Stripe or PayPal: Best protection. You can dispute charges if something goes wrong. We use Stripe — the same payment processor trusted by Amazon, Google, and millions of businesses.
  • ✅ PayPal Goods & Services: Buyer protection included. Never use "Friends & Family" for purchases.
  • ⚠️ Bank transfer: Acceptable for established galleries with physical addresses, but you lose chargeback protection.
  • 🚫 Cryptocurrency: No buyer protection. Irreversible. Legitimate art galleries don't insist on crypto.
  • 🚫 Wire transfer to individuals: The #1 method used by scammers. Never wire money to a person selling art online.
  • 🚫 Gift cards: No legitimate business asks for gift card payments. Full stop.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • "Original oil painting" at €50: Real original oil paintings by exhibited artists start at hundreds, not tens. If it seems too cheap, it's a print or mass-produced replica.
  • No close-up photos: You should see brushstrokes, texture, canvas edges. If all images are perfectly smooth and flat, you're probably looking at a print.
  • No Certificate of Authenticity: Any reputable seller provides documentation.
  • Pressure tactics: "Only 1 left!" or "Price goes up tomorrow!" Real art doesn't need countdown timers.
  • No return policy: Confident galleries offer returns. We provide 14-day returns per EU law.
  • No physical address: If you can't find where the business is located, don't buy.
